Kijungu and Daraja la Mungu

Kijungu and Daraja la Mungu are two stunning natural attractions near Tukuyu town in the Mbeya region. They are formed by the Kiwira River, which flows from the Uporoto Mountains. The river is known for its waterfalls, rapids, and unique features, such as the Kijungu basin and Daraja la Mungu (God’s Bridge).

The Kijungu basin has a pot-like shape. It creates a whirlpool before the water flows down the rocks for about 8 kilometers to Daraja la Mungu. This natural bridge was formed long ago when water from the Kiwira River met lava from Mt. Rungwe. The bridge is about 40 meters long and 3 meters wide. Locals have used it for generations to move between villages. However, in the early 1960s, the Russians built a bridge nearby. They were exploring the area for a hydroelectric power plant. This reduced the use of the natural bridge, but it remains a fascinating site.

Local Myths and History

Local legends say a dragon guards treasures in the riverbed at Kijungu and Daraja la Mungu. The dragon is said to sacrifice people by dropping them into the river. Some believe the river suddenly widens when someone tries to jump across, causing them to perish.
