Mbeya

Mbeya, a city of rolling hills and a cool climate, is Tanzania’s agricultural heartland, known for its vast tea, coffee, and banana plantations. Founded as a gold mining settlement during German colonial rule, it later became a key economic and cultural hub. The name "Mbeya" comes from the Safwa word Ibheya (salt), reflecting its early trade history, while its scenic hills earned it the nickname "The Scotland of Africa." Once part of the British colonial Southern Highland Province, it became a region in 1961. Bordering Zambia and Malawi, Mbeya serves as a major transit hub with key entry points at Tunduma and Kasumulu
