Bordering the Serengeti and the shores of Lake Victoria, Mara is a region of breathtaking landscapes and deep cultural heritage. Golden savannahs stretch endlessly, home to the world-famous Serengeti National Park, where millions of wildebeest thunder across the plains in the Great Migration. Along the lake, fishing villages thrive, their boats dotting the horizon as fishermen cast their nets at sunrise. Fertile lands between the lake and highlands sustain agriculture, producing maize, beans, and bananas that fuel the local economy.
Mara is also the heartland of the Kuria and Luo communities, whose traditions remain strong in daily life. The region played a role in Tanzania’s independence movement, as it was home to the country’s founding father, Julius Nyerere, whose legacy is honored in Butiama, his birthplace. Nearby, the Serengeti ecosystem extends its wonders, offering some of the most spectacular wildlife encounters on Earth.
