Lake Duluti Forest Reserve
Lake Duluti Forest Reserve is one of Arusha’s most stunning and peaceful natural attractions. Located about 15 kilometers east of the city, it is popular with locals and tourists. The reserve covers an area of 86.24 hectares, with Lake Duluti covering 70% of the area. The lake sits in the subsidiary vents of Mount Meru and is fed by rainfall and groundwater, with no surface inlet or outlet.
The lake’s deepest point is around 700 meters, and it extends about 600 meters wide and 1 kilometer long. Its waters are clear and greenish, home to various fish species. The surrounding forest is rich in biodiversity, with 255 species of plants, reptiles like lizards and snakes, and small animals such as monkeys and squirrels.
Visitors can enjoy a range of activities. You can boat across the calm waters, hike through the forest trails, or bird watch to spot over 104 bird species, including grey herons, fish eagles, cormorants, ospreys, and kingfishers. On clear days, designated viewpoints offer stunning views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. The reserve also features cultural sites like prayer mountains and caves, which hold significance for locals.
